Department News and Updates: February 21 2020

Congratulations Huaijun! He will be announced as an awardee for the Chancellor’s International Engagement Award, on March 5th at the “International Connections Reception for the Globally Engaged”, sponsored by UC Davis Department of Global Affairs.
Congratulations to Ellen Lai (PhD student in Integrative Genetics and Genomics) and Claire Shaw (PhD student in Animal Biology) for being selected as two of ten semi-finalists for the UC Davis Grad Slam. Ellen Lai presented “Why are Cows so Lame” and Claire Shaw presented “Meet Your Microbiome”. Ellen and Claire will compete in the UC Davis Final Round for a spot in the UC-wide Grad Slam competition. If you want to support our students, the Final Round will be on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) Ballroom. Juan Medrano and Alma Islas co-authored “Deducing signaling pathways from parallel actions of arsenite and antimonite in human epidermal keratinocytes” in Scientific Reports (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-59577-0).

Alison Van Eenennaam will be presenting at the NCBA webinar. The topic is: “Making the Best Use of Current Genetic Selection Tools” as part of The Cattlemen's Webinar Series. Amy Mclean has been working on a collaborative project radio-collaring wild donkeys. She is working in Death Valley, the Mojave and in Fort Irwin and NASA areas with colleagues at Colorado State University, United States Geological Services, and the nonprofit Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue. They are monitoring donkey behavior, ecology and pathogen frequency. This is a 2 year study with 100 donkeys on the range. They released Their first radio collared burros on February 7th. Alison Van Eenennaam attended the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting in Seattle, Washington as Section Chair, Agriculture, Food, and Renewable Resources. See picture below
